About page - What to include and why?

One of the most important components of a blogger is his identity. And this can be shown and maintained and shown through your “about page”. According to many bloggers, it is the 2nd most viewed page after your home page, if you are a good time blogger.
People who reach your blog try to know more about you and your blog, and this all lies in your “About page”. In my view, this is what you have to include in your about page -
- About the blog
- About yourself, what you are actually!
- How do someone contact you
- Any additional links where you want the visitor to start with
So, first of all, welcoming the visitor to your blog, and sharing some blog info, like from when it is running etc. Then you can write about the one’s who maintain and write in the blog. I wrote up a whole story(kinda type of self promotion) in my about page and made it look easy for people to read and understand what the blog is about. Explain what are you on the web and off the web too! This would increase people’s impression on you.
Some bloggers just ignore editing an above page. Or they just don’t find time to edit that and write something about the blog? A default page says -
This is an example of a WordPress page, you could edit this to put information about yourself or your site so readers know where you are coming from. You can create as many pages like this one or sub-pages as you like and manage all of your content inside of WordPress.
And when i search in google for this text, you will see 1,030,000 results for that. So those many pages are left unedited. Is writing about your blog wasting your time?
Now, for those who want to know what are the advantages of having a good about page -
- People would know about your blogging niche and blog needs from here. There is no other static page where you can display the topic of the blog.
- You keep yourself open with others by having an about page. There is nothing you are hiding and people would like your open-minded thought. I myself go and check the about pages, and 50% of the blogger’s skills are decided by looking at their about page.
- Sometimes, people are more eager to know about the blogger rather than his blog(accd. to Darren from Problogger.net) and they appreciate if you have more information in your about page.
- You can link to the best posts or some start-up places in your blog through the about page, if some new visitor arrives at your blog.
So start editing yours and have something informative in that page! I’m going to check each and every commentator’s blog

Good point there, Chetan. Bloggers often neglect their About page. If they don’t have time editing it, they might as well hide it for a while instead of having a WordPress default.

One of these days I really will have to get around to making a proper About Me section. I’ve had Quirky Jessi for a year and a half now and have yet to do it, lol.

I didn’t know there are that many about us pages that are left alone…. I know alot of sites don’t tend to have a page which I find a very costly mistake the owner is making.

I just updated my about page with your tips. I forgot the link to the contact box. I used to separate the “About Me” and the “About the Site”, but it’s now combined on one.
Don’t you hate incomplete About pages on blog sites?! Really frustrating.
