Acute linkplasia – How to avoid this

April 6th, 2008 | View Comments

search engine spamAcute linkplasia, this term might be not existing right now on the web but my medical knowledge might try to link the health term with search engine optimization. This term basically means -
Acute – Sudden
Link – Backlink
Plasia – Increase in number

This basically means building links in a very aggressive and rapid manner. In most of the cases that i observed, if a website tries to build backlinks very rapidly, it sees its rankings being hurt in google. So, try not to be a case of Acute linkplasia, and never over-promote a website very fast which would just make your website look spammy in the eyes of search engines.

Here are a few things that i suggest you to avoid acute linkplasia -

  1. Avoid free directories
  2. Build links slowly
  3. Quality matters, not quantity
  4. More content always helps
  5. Link farms.. worst links
  6. Theme sponsorship wont help

So, saying something about each of the points that always were at my finger tips to be typed some day, are here -

Avoiding free directories - A basic website owner(just a website owner with no knowledge of link building) would ask webmasters how to build links in an easy manner, and the greatest of the webmasters would foolishly advice them to just submit to free directories! Wow.. being a good webmaster do you really think that submitting to free directories would help them out?
There are a couple points i would mention here, Firstly that on an average around 40% of the free directories would accept your website if it is of good quality, and secondly that the free directories have become nothing but link farms with thousands of links and zero content. You would land somewhere in middle of the links and really would find no gain for your website in the end.

Build links slowly - A very basic point to explain, as already said. Any type of link building has to be kept in a steady manner and you might already have heard about “slow and steady wins the race” ;) . You would be ultimately rated as a spammer by search engines if you try to build links in a speedy way.

Quality matters, not quantity - Link builders, learn from this phrase. Webmasters mostly go for cheaper and more number of links, and land up having backlinks in very low quality web pages. A general tactic to remember is – 50 PR3 links would be way better than 500 PR0 and PR1 links. I know most of you follow the practice what am mentioning but there are still many who try to go for the number.

More content always helps - The point i want to stress here is about the natural links. This would also relate to steady link building. If you launch a website, don’t just waste your time in searching for backlinks and buying them. Instead, stress on making more content in your website which helps in long time traffic from search engines and also generally people, mostly bloggers would link to your articles if they like it. So why to run for backlinks when they are coming your way naturally?

Link farms.. worst links - In a few webmaster forums, you would normally see people offering free links but do you realize when they are available? Keyword pages, free directories, dofollow blogs(which already have hundreds of comments in the same page) which gives you free links but also decreases your site’s quality as your site can be graded having bad neighbors.

Theme sponsorships wont help - Search engines(mostly google) aren’t always automated. If you heard about “Paid links” smash done by google lately on paid web directories, you might have seen a few instances where the footer sponsored links in free themes were also targeted and filtered. This was a good way of link building(sometimes thousands of backlinks very fast if a theme becomes popular and many use it) but now its not a wise decision if you are paying to sponsor themes.

These were my thoughts on the so-called key term “Acute linkplasia” and this keyword has zero results in google right now, lets see how good people act on it and follow it ;) What’s your say on this?

Great post Chetan. Some good advice i`ve seen many sites go down the drain for link building to quickly. I do however slightly disagree with free web directories.

I run a free directoy and 90% of the sites submitted are rejected as i only accept what i deem to be quality websites which have great content.

I have mentioned about that in the 1st point.. There are a maximum of 40% of free directory owners who maintain good quality directories and approve just quality websites.

50 PR3 links would be way better than 500 PR0 and PR1 links
Wat more does anyone want than “quality”
One may not get good response or publicity or fame instantly if he follows the above saying, but yeah in the future he would be immensely popular. As much as he never would have imagined.
So maintain the quality n chetan keep up the good work u’ve taken up..

  4. Varun Says:

I liked the term. :) Good points were made all through out the points, but I don’t quite agree with your statement “Theme sponsorships won’t help.” Based on my experience, sponsoring themes has done quite well in terms of getting backlinks and ranking well on search engines. ;)

You can build links as fast as you like as long as they are from quality websites. And there is nothing wrong with theme sponsorship, unless your theme is used by too many link farms.

I once sponsored a theme which was used by a blog network, and none of the links were shown ever in backlinks when checked at google.

Chetan, I would have to disagree with your theme sponsorship. I wrote a post about organic linking … I can also say that your blog is linking to Justin Tadlock’s site who designed your theme so it is definately not a waste to sponsor a theme. Although if this theme had multiple urls then it would’ve been a problem. Same thing with Brain Gardner his website have really high rankings and he design themes all the time and sponsor it with his own site. Perhaps using the term sponsors: is what kills a site.

  16. Chetan Says:

Sponsoring themes is really risky, because if you are doing so, and you fall being used by a network of casino blogs, what would you expect? Nothing else but just decrease in your site’s quality due to bad backlinks. This was the point i was trying to explain. Hope you got me.

  17. Crystal Says:

I used to be totally into link dumps and the sort. Everything counts right? So might as well get as many linkbacks as possible. It’s done more harm than good so I’m grateful for this artcile informing anyone who don’t know the disadvantages of hardcore link-building.

Doesn’t this one site (forgot url) provide a comparison chart of how many pr3 or pr1 sites you need to get to the next rank level? I think there’s a equivalent factor in there.

I have been trying to be careful of linking to stuff, some savvy advice here!
