Apple iPhone 3G with Vodafone in India - August 22nd

Submitted by Chetan on Wednesday, 20 August 200817 Comments

You might remember, that i had booked iphone through airtel and vodafone before and so Vodafone mailed me and to all those who pre-registered it, that the iPhone is coming to India on August 22nd, 2008 but the prices were shocking. Update : Airtel iPhone 3G pricing also the same! Sucks.

apple iphone 3g

First to start with, i was shocked to see the prices.
We are delighted to announce that the iPhone 3G will be available in India from August 22, 2008
It will be available in 8GB & 16GB models, priced at Rs 31,000 and Rs 36,100 respectively.

I thought it might be somewhere around Rs. 20,000 but these guys are pretty much out of the budget and their minds. It is around $800 and $900 respectively. The same is got for $200 in the U.S.
That’s not it. I think Vodafone is coming with these with postpaid plans so you have to pay more monthly, making iPhone one of the pocket drainers.

And here is what all they said in the mail -

Be the first to get the iPhone
We have received a large number of registrations. As there are limited stocks, make sure that you get yours first, by paying an advance of Rs 10,000 to confirm your booking.

Where can you make this advance payment?
The iPhone 3G will be available at select Vodafone Stores. All you need to do is drop in at any select Vodafone Store between August 20 and 21 and make the advance payment by cash or credit card. Don´t forget to show the iPhone booking SMS, which you would have received from us, when you visit the Vodafone Store to pay the advance.

Get an appointment now. No queues for you.
Once you pay the advance, we will immediately give you an appointment date and time, starting
August 22 when you can come and experience a full demonstration and collect your iPhone, all ready to use with your contacts and settings, by paying the balance amount.

Hurry! Limited stocks.
Remember, the sooner you confirm your booking, the earlier you´ll get your iPhone. We have limited stocks and it will be on first come, first serve basis.

Buy a Vodafone connection now!
As you are not a Vodafone customer, you will need a Vodafone connection for your iPhone 3G.
We recommend that when you come to confirm your booking, please do get yourself a Vodafone connection too. Remember to carry a passport sized picture, photo ID proof and address proof as these are required for activating your Vodafone SIM card.

Has vodafone gone nuts??? I am sure there will not be many buyers to buy that one.. rather they would go with the Nokia N96 mobile which is also going to be priced around Rs. 36000.

oh! i love apple: they’ve consistently got their game wrong in india since steve jobs came here looking for peace in the seventies. man! what do they think? indians are idiotic fools who don’t know what’s the price in the US versus what’s the price in India? Anyways, was quite expecting this, as also all these hidden costs to stack up. The clunky and clumsy PC outsold, outmaneuvered, and captured the entire personal computer market 15 years ago, from the elegant macintosh. looks like apple’s iphone will be the next in their corporate saga, if they carry on with such ‘brilliant’ strategies.

This is a joke. Who will buy this crap for 30+k ? they call it iphone 3G, 3G is not yet operational in India. Consumers should sue these companies, who want to loot Indian money. A phone which is prices at the US for 8k is selling here for 4x price. This is not fair.

I dont think this is worth man..! this is pretty very much expensive.. I had got the Apple iPhone 1G at 400$ and unlocked myself.. and good thing i did was used for a month and sold it for same price, no doubt the phone is good but the price is not worth.. better get a good PDA for 10-15k and a GPS system(with ipod, video) for 5k so u get 2 gadgets at 20k or PDA with gps also coming within 20k.. what for u need to pay 30k ?? they’ve gone mad and taking undue advantage of people, & in this era people are smarter than they are, so they got to get a good lesson in coming days! also a new samsung phone replicating iphone is released now, so lets see what happens..

As i expect, it would be very less sales of iPhone as people had already bought unlocked phones for 20k and adding 12k more not be in everyone’s budget..

They should surely reduce the rates!

It’s something funny am seeing here. Apple has released the product officially for just $200 and a network provider becomes a middle man and uses his service in it and sells it for $800 and $900.
This is just insane and ridiculous. I think vodafone should have thought more than what they did and had to set the prices to at least Rs. 25000 which would have been a decent price.

iPhone can not make it to the standards of Nokia N96 which as you said is Rs. 36000 in price.
Then why is the price that huge? Also to increase the burden they are offering the phone with postpaid plans to empty our pockets faster. LOL

How could vodafone think easily that Indians can buy it at that price?
I too will wait and watch till they are forced to calm down with their prices and when i see a decent price, then it would be a good grab.

[...] Vodafone prices of iPhone were nearly similar to this one and i see no difference! Once again a disappointment for many gadget lovers. As the commentators said in the vodafone post, waiting and watching these service providers reducing the price would be the best option. The prices would decrease sooner or later and then we can have our grab. [...]

You get black iphones in market for 16 - 20K. They simply bring from US and sell it here in black. No taxes, duties as everything is hidden.

Companies have to pay hefty taxes and import duties.
