Apple iPod Nano 4G Review
Studded with a memory capacity of 8GB and 16GB, the Apple iPod Nano 4th Generation music + mp4 player is one of the best designed music products from Apple. The curved design, the thin model with a 2″ screen for photo and video viewing, this device is a rockstar.
From user perspective, i would list in all the things one would love and what i actually loved in the iPod Nano which i bought some time back.
First impression – Surprised with the size, didn’t really think it would be so sleek and thin. Was just slipping from my hands for the first instance. The screen was of the size that i expected and overall, i loved to have this one and happy that i bought it.
The loads of features -
Genius playlist – Had just heard of the playlist before i bought it. But this is what it actually is – The genius feature finds songs from your music library, which are actually more played, and makes a playlist for you which you might find interesting than the one which you have made.
The 8 GB iPod which i have, can accommodate around 2000 songs and 8 hours of video and 16 GB just doubles that. And the Nano is more than enough to enjoy the music, watch videos, photos and play games. You won’t just get bored with it, until you see something more sleek than this beauty!
Turn the iPod to one side, and you can flip through to the larger view of the cover flow. And the quality of images/videos in Apple products can never be downgraded. They are always of great quality, and so is Apple iPod Nano. You can personally rate each song being played, while its running and also can add it to your on-the-go playlist.
Finding music made better – You can search the songs by albums, playlists, tracks, artists or directly with the search option, and while searching you can add to the searched song to a playlist.
Gaming for added fun – Didn’t actually knew that the iPod has 3 pre-loaded games for fun. The accelerometer-inspired games are awesome where you have to keep tilting your iPod to make the ball move and make the stages cleared. The games that come in with the iPod are Klondike, Maze and Vortex.
Shuffle with a shake – (Admit that i have not yet found this in my iPod). This is another cool feature from Apple, with which a shake of the iPod would change the song being played in the playlist. And this is not the next song, but is a shuffled random one in the playlist. I am yet to see what type of shake changes the song.
Cover Flow view in horizontal tilt – This is what you see in iTunes. The Cover flow view in iPod when its tilted horizontally, gives the perfect view of the playlist or the songs list. Tilt it vertically, and you would scroll down the list of songs.
Things you can see – Songs, Video Songs, TV Shows, Movies, Podcasts, Photos and Play games. All stuff well organized and separated that a new user can also easily browse through everything and play what they desire.
Extras in the Nano -
1. Alarms – You can set an alarm for particular time, and also have sleep timer set for certain time from 15 minutes to 120 minutes. The alarm can be set with the time, which is set with the universal clock.
2. Calendars – This is one of the synchronizable items you see in iPod Nano. Your calendar items in Macbook can be copied to the Nano, and also the to-do things come with the beep alarms for you to remind anything on time.
3. Clocks – World clock, showing time of anywhere in the world, with the time initially set once.
4. Contacts – All details can be found only if you sync with your mac, and add the contacts from Mac to the iPod Nano. Once added, you would see every detail from Name, address, phone no. to email address, birthday etc.
5. Games – As said, the accelerometer games which come with the new iPod are Klondike, Maze and Vortex and they one of the best time wasters.
6. Notes – It lacks writing notes, as there is no keyboard or pad(it shouldn’t have one too, it’s an iPod lol). You can just read any notes transferred from your computer.
7. Screen lock – Prevent others to use your iPod when you don’t like someone else using it. Set a screen lock with your password key, and protect from usage.
8. Stopwatch – Another handy tool that comes to use a few times.
There are a lot of things in the Settings section which you can play with very well, and understand each of the things pretty rapidly if you are new to Mac OS related products. And the font size of the text can be enlarged or decreased in size taking our comfort as the choice.
The screen resolution is 320 x 240 pixels and the quality of pictures is amazingly smooth and excellent.
Now things that Apple talk about -
The Apple iPod Nano is available in 9 colors, and the storage is via USB cable. It weighs 36.8 gms.
It has World’s biggest small screen – Watching movies, TV shows, and videos is big fun on iPod nano. And the high-resolution picture looks crisp and vivid on the 2-inch widescreen display. So you can always have a little video with you.
The iPod Nano 4G is also called as the Environmental Friendly iPod as its body is made of -
- Arsenic-free glass
- Brominated flame retardant-free
- Mercury-free
- PVC-free
- Highly recyclable aluminum enclosure

The battery runs for long 24 hours of music play, and 4 hours of video playing when the iPod is fully charged. And fast-battery charge of the battery upto 80% taks 1.5 hours, and full charge takes 3 hours to complete.
The pack comes with the iPod nano, white Earphones, USB 2.0 cable, Dock adapter, Quick Start guide which helps the new users for first time usage.
The 8 GB iPod Nano 4G is available for $150 and 16 GB is available for $200. The prices can be lesser in offers available in Amazon store and some other online shops. Having one from the Apple stores is a better option always.
Rating : 4.5/5

I have found the shuffle with a shake feature rather useful. you actually have to shake your ipod quite vigorously.
also, if you don’t like this feature, (e.g. if yu keep dropping your ipod and it shuffles) you can turn it off in the settings > playback.
you can also turn cover flow tilt off under settings > General.
