Apple had shown ads about being totally virus-free against the Windows operating system, and showed how safe and good it is, but now its unsure of how safe apple computers are, as in the FAQ it has mentioned that there might be rarely a few viruses that can infect the apple computers.
In the Get a Mac FAQ, the answer to the security of Mac has the answer -
Yes. While no computer connected to the Internet is 100 percent immune to viruses and spyware, the Mac is built on a solid UNIX foundation and designed with security in mind. The Mac web browser, Safari, alerts you whenever you’re downloading an application — even if it’s disguised as a picture or movie file. And Apple continually makes free security updates available for Mac owners. You can even have them download automatically.
This indirectly means that any browser apart from Safari can be a way of entry for the very rare Mac viruses which can be very fatal to the mac computers.
Apple currently recommends Intego’s VirusBarrier X5, McAfee’s VirusScan for Mac, and Symantec’s Norton Anti-Virus 11.
Still, a small antivirus program in Mac can be enough to keep it totally safe, but Apple now can’t be called totally safe and immunized as Apple themselves say that.

Damn. I thought I can’t get a virus. Although after 2 years of using macbook 8-10 hours a day 6 days a week using internet for work and fun I don’t get one. Although members of my family sometimes gets some with their windows systems but they use internet much less.
I think that’s the good thing about having macbook for not having virus.
I would NEVER have Windows. If you go into the REGISTRY you
will find 81 services. When I shut down all but 7, my computer
ran like a stripped-ass-ed Zebra. WINDOWS has a TRIP SWITCH alerting you that you must re-install WINDOWS within 3-days or your
computer will shut down. I eliminated the REMOTE SERVICES where the
TROJANS and VIRUSES come in. I literally SHUT the DOOR on them.
This bundling is CORRUPT. Everyone who buys into WINDOWS will find
that their computer works fine for a short time, and then slows down. There’s big money in anti-software, and Bill Gates wants to
cut them in on a failed product. WINDOWS is now flooding the market
with cheap $400-$500 computers. NOTHING has changed. Windows software literally TRIPS over itself. If you take a look at Apple’s magnetic connectors , you wiil find they are far superior to Bill’s
el cheapo prong connectors. A lot of offshore financial centers will
not use WINDOWS. They use APACHE or the UNIX operating SYSTEM.
How anybody could put out shit for such a long time and get away with it , is like the FEDERAL RESERVE and TREASURY and BANKS keeping
the money out of the hands of the people who are in need of help
to save their homes. But for the vast majority of Americans, if they had a mouth full of shit, they wouldn’t say ” SHIT! “.
This is wrong, too. Microsoft wrote this Blog. The only way to get a virus on a MAC is through the Windows programs that you download on a Mac. Most Mac users do get the Windows translator program, this is the reason that there MIGHT be a possibility that a Mac gets a Trojan Horse. Plus this also can be eliminated by using a firewall cord. I am going on 2.5 years using our Mac w/no problem.(On a $799 Mac Mini computer). The whole point is, no matter how much easier a PC w/Windows is to use, you still end up having to upgrade virus scans (yearly- and not for free $$$), upgrade programs yearly (Windows Excel, Word, P.Point Etc.) or your computer will be out of date. A Mac automatically updates software upgrades on its own. I dare anyone with a PC to show me that their computer is running better then mine after 2.5 years. And prove to me that they didn’t pay for Windows upgrades and security upgrades every year. This Blog is to scare the Mac users to purchase more bullshit Microsoft programs because the Mac Computer needs non and they are losing lots of $$$ because of people fed-up with PC’s. PC users have to continuously buy programs just to keep their computer running normal!!!!! Microsoft has the same virus makers on the payroll as they do virus makers. They sell more anti virus programs this way. They have been ding this for over ten years because they knew the day would come when someone like Mac would make a superior computer that you don’t have to keep updating!!!!!!!! Rebuttal anyone?
You are an idiot, and the person before you is as well. The only reason Apple computers did not get viruses is because Apple holds a tiny market share. You can use the analogy of software games. Apple doesn’t have squat for games because there is no money in it for the developers. As people start to believe Apple computers are invulnerable to attacks and viruses, Apple’s market share rises. As the share rises, developers see a market in software games for Apple. In turn, Developers make games for Apple computers. Substitute the word Games with Viruses/malware. It is a very simple analogy for you to follow. No software is impervious to threats or perfect, it just takes having a good reason for someone to take the time to find the flaws. Apple does recommend users purchase a virus scanner.
Noobs….
Very Interesting comments, as I am big fan of apple products. I’m getting worried about my laptop, because it might get viruses.
Speaking of viruses, does anyone know who makes them?
I mean what do they get out of making viruses?
When we think about it, when people make viruses, what is the available solution…..anti-viruses..that’s obvious. But what would anti-virus programs do without viruses?
I was reading the info on here with my desperate attempt to find a functional computer that was not susceptable to viruses. Unfortunately, virus issues on my old Windows computers (notice I referred to more than one) threw me back with my health issues. I have never wished negativities upon ANYONE, but these days, I am wishing EXTREME negativities to engulf and crush those that create viruses for a living.
I do agree about the greed associated with the crappy Windows computers that last for a very short duration due to their extreme susceptability to viruses(my last lovely ****ing Vista product did not last for more than a week without the requirement of using recovery discs). I am considering a product from Apple now because it can’t be any worse than the Windows products!!
Mac users and their “we are in indestructible” attitude. Even Apple on their own site has antivirus software downloads. I guess Steve Gods… oops I mean Jobs doesn’t think so.
Really, what is a terrorist going to go after? A city with millions of people or a rural town with a population of 300?
Enjoy your false sense of security. I hope some day that Mac does get a significant marketshare that will entice deadbeat virus writers to hack and attack the supposed “Holy Grail” of operating systems.
Oh, and one last thought. if Mac OS is so perfect, why are there different versions and security releases?
