Many of the bloggers in the blogosphere might be knowing about the Comment relish plugin, if not then here is a close-up about the plugin -
Comment relish plugin is an auto function by which a thanks giving mail is sent to the commenter who has posted a comment for the first time in your blog. This message can be customized in the admin panel plugin options.
This plugin has been considered as one of the good ways to make people subscribe to your blog! As in the message, the blog author can include his Email subscription link and most of the times the commentor subscribes seeing the good response from the blogger.
Also this plugin helps in attracting the commentor once again to come and comment in the blog, which is explained as one of the ways to increase comments in the blog as said by JohnTP. This plugin is also considered as a way of turning one time commentors into RSS subscribers by easy wordpress.

So adding up the factors, here are the advantages of using the plugin -
- Makes a good impression, commentor feels that the blogger is kind enough to email him & thank him for his comments in the blog.
- The commenter can be converted to an RSS subscriber, if the blogger is intelligent enough and prepares a good email to be sent to the first time commentors, including the RSS subscribe link for the blog.
- More comments - Seeing the good response from the blogger, the commentor feels good about the blog and would comment regularly in the blog :)

So talking about the good isn’t enough here, there are some disadvantages of this plugin -
- Chris Garrett posted in his blog that his web host company, Dreamhost, messaged him to remove the plugin as it was eating up the servers if it was a active blog. Here is a small part of what they told him -
Please disable the plugin that is causing this query (otherwise I’ll have to disable your mysql table or user and I really don’t want to do that!).
It’s not efficient enough to be running on a shared hosting server and is contributing to high loads and poor mysql performance.
- Couple of errors seen in Wordpress support forums seen here and here. And actually the same thing happened to my blog today, when i approved a trackback to one of my posts. I deleted the trackback from Mysql but again when i published next post having links to older posts of my blogs, trackbacks were automatically sent and again the same error! Felt like i will have to deactivate the plugin.

Right now the plugin is deactivated and i am trying to adjust some way for the trackback issues.

Are you using the plugin in your blog?
