dell logoJust read this news in InformationWeek, that Dell is going to continue the computer sales with pre-installed Windows XP rather than the Vista operating system. The new ordered computers would be shipped with Windows XP installed in it. According to Dell, the OptiPlex desktops and Precision workstations are going to have the normal XP version in them for atleast the next 2 years.

Microsoft has said it would officially stop making Windows XP available to large PC vendors on June 30. Microsoft has said it plans to launch Vista successor Windows 7 in 2010. And Dell is trying to make people skip Vista for now.

According to InformationWeek,

Buyers who want a Dell system with XP pre-installed after June 30 will technically be purchasing a system with a license for Vista. However, Dell will also include a preinstalled copy of XP on systems marketed as Windows Vista “Bonus” edition.

The “Bonus” option will be available on Dell business systems that can be configured with Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Ultimate. To downgrade those systems to XP, users will need to call Microsoft to receive an XP activation code.

Downgrading from Vista to the normal Windows XP will not cost anything additional. “Independent” system builders can also get XP until 2009, according to Microsoft.

“It’s standard practice for original equipment manufacturers, retailers, and system builders to continue offering the previous version of Windows for a certain period of time after a new version is released. Dell is exercising their right to offer Windows XP as an option, though we expect the majority of their customers to continue to order the latest and greatest technology, including Windows Vista.”
