Digg is a big social bookmarking website which actually helps in getting your website blasting relationship. But remember, it should not be your sole aim to get traffic from Digg if you are thinking to be a well reputed member there.

Now looking back into my experience, i can say that these all things would happen if you get to the homepage of Digg for one of your stories -
Digg Logo
1. Bursting traffic for a few hours till the story stays on the homepage(as i have seen many many digg users are lazy enough to check only the homepage for any interesting stories, thats the main reason you have to try to get it to the homepage.)
2. If you are the user who submitted the story and got it to the homepage, your karma and strength increases, and chances of getting your stories popular gets higher in future.
3. Backlink - You are guaranteed atleast 20 links from various blogs for an interesting story of yours if its on the homepage. Many readers and digg users are tech bloggers, who are always hungry for new topics to publish in their blogs, and they don’t mind linking to your story page if its worth it.

Now, What i always try to explain is that Digg is not just a social bookmarking website, but is also a rising social network where people interact with each other and share their views and opinions.
Every social bookmkarking website is an attraction for Spammers and Digg isn’t an exception here. You have to keep yourself unique and active, and have to make good network around you if you want to improve your experience and usability in Digg.

Hitting onto the front page would be a passion for new Digg users, and would be an addiction if your story gets to the front page for a few times. Here is how you can get(hope so!) to the front page of Digg -

1. Don’t submit crappy copied news - These won’t at all get enough number of votes for you as the story might be read and known already to many other users. Be unique and feel the difference.

2. Build a network - As mentioned before, i feel Digg to be a good social networking website. Make friends, fans there and after a good number of friends are made, a shout of your story to all of them can get people coming to your story page. But don’t take it as your sole duty, as sharing every story very frequently can make people think you as a spammer.

3. Make your story attractive - Title, description should be something that would make people come to your website to read the complete story and vote for your good work.

4. Pay for services - Not helpful for long term, but effective if you want to test what Digg is for and what the front page effect is. There are many people who know the easiest tricks to reach the homepage, and they sell these services.

5. Lists work effectively - Instead of having huge paragraphs in your website, making some lists of points and posting a story on Digg with some title like “15 Ways to….” and “7 Effective….” etc. would be getting more attraction and Diggs to your story.

6. Select a less popular topic - Try to write and post something in a category which has stories with probably less number of votes always, when compared to other categories. This can give more chances of hitting the homepage.

This story would not be probably submitted to Digg as I am not a serious Digg user and don’t have big network there right now, if you feel its good enough, then you can submit it and share the Digg story link here :)
