There are thousands of blogs opened per day and most of them are just crap and some are made and built seriously. But every blog seems to face problems in the start, on getting traffic to the new resource of the web.
Here are a few ways by which you can drive traffic to your new blog -
1. Linking others - One of the ways to send trackbacks by linking to other blogs and then getting traffic from their blogs. This would at least attract the blogger who
is linked to, and also you might be linked by them in future if they are the same level bloggers. This not only helps in traffic, but blogger relationship also increases by this way.
2. Forum participation - Participation in webmaster and blogging forums is one of the best ways to get free traffic to your website. In forums, you are normally allowed to place links in signature. And this is a good way to attract visitors to your blog by having some attractive titles etc. Also in some forums like Digitalpoint forums, v7n forums, bloggeries forums etc. you can place your blog feed, and near your username, your recent blog post title is shown linked to the post. This drives in good traffic.
3. Run a blog contest - Blog contests(like the one i am running right now) are common when you earn some good revenue from the blog and you think of some give back to your visitors, but blog contests are a must to boost your blog traffic at its start-off point. A kick-off contest has been a good visitor driving technique for many bloggers and this trick still works a lot. Again, contests can be of many ways, like posting in their blog about it, or reviewing contest, or RSS subscribing contest. Not just starting a contest, but promoting a blog contest adds traffic in bonus.
4. Write attractive titles - Writing attractive titles for your blog posts is another good way to get some good traffic. And maintaining good titles etc. from the start gives your visitors a good impression.
5. Comment on other blogs - Commenting on other blogs of the same niche of yours, and big and high traffic blogs might bring in you some traffic and more traffic might flow in if your comment is controversial, and something like questioning the blogger etc.
Negative comments in other blogs will get some traffic to your blog as people often think about the commenter and think to give a visit to the their blog.
6. Guest blogging - There are a lot of blogs in the blogosphere which accepts guest posts from bloggers, and this is a good way to have a kick start to your blog. Blogs like Problogger, John chow, john cow, tyler cruz etc. are the best places which would send you bulk load of traffic for a single guest post there.
7. Be regular - Don’t just make your visitors sad by not updating your blog regularly when its still now. Things may be different later but in the early stages, frequent updates with new posts regularly is a must. This will get you good amount of return traffic.
Set the posting rate later but dont go slow in the start.
8. Social networking - This has lately been one of the good ways to get some traffic. Have profiles in Myspace, Facebook, Orkut, Twitter etc. then be sure to leave your blog URL in each of them in your profile. That doesn’t end your job, you have to participate in discussions in those networking sites, and topics related to your niche, making your impact in the blogosphere.
9. Social bookmarking and feed maintenance - Submit your website to each of the big social bookmarking websites, and also have a good feed manager for your blog, like feedburner. Having people subscribed to your blog can get return traffic to your blog through feeds, making your new content reached the readers as and when you post.
10. Contact fellow bloggers - Make some network with fellow bloggers and make them know about your new blog and most of them would forward to others or mention about your blogs in their blogs. Exchanging blogrolls, or recommendations about each others might create small buzz aorund.
11. Write, write and write - Be writing stuff that might interest people, but make sure that it is of some good quality. As poor quality writing might get you low quality traffic. People reach your blog to read something new, and if your new blog has nothing new, then your blog will never get established and will always be new!
Follow all the steps above and watch the traffic flow in like -

Amazing tips, i for one can atest to the fact that posting in forums (which i do fairly often) can indeed get you a good deal of traffic to your site, and who knows? if someone in a forum likes your blog, they may pass it along to other blogs

I can see how criticism can create a buzz and spawn some traffic out of curiosity. However, it can backfire as well. People can see who the big fish is and when they weigh the two opinions – if the reader is not smart enough to understand some of the important nuances of the topic, the reader will think that the bigger fish must be right, else he wouldn’t be the bigger fish.
But, as you say, if you have something worthwhile to say and you say it in a way that most people can understand, you’ll reap some traffic increase. You might also pick up a few devotees on the way.
This all happened to me on another site where I pissed off most everyone there by questioning the stats on the site. It was obvious, but many were very loyal followers of the site. So I stuck my hand in a hornets’ nest, but I knew it before I did it.
The result was gaining a handful of followers to my pages. 
They agreed totally with me and didn’t give in to emotional whim.
