However, it can backfire as well. People can see who the big fish is and when they weigh the two opinions - if the reader is not smart enough to understand some of the important nuances of the topic, the reader will think that the bigger fish must be right, else he wouldn't be the bigger fish. But, as you say, if you have something worthwhile to say and you say it in a way that most people can understand, you'll reap some traffic increase. You might also pick up a few devotees on the way. This all happened to me on another site where I pissed off most everyone there by questioning the stats on the site. It was obvious, but many were very loyal followers of the site. So I stuck my hand in a hornets' nest, but I knew it before I did it. ;-) The result was gaining a handful of followers to my pages. :-D They agreed totally with me and didn't give in to emotional whim.
