All on twitter people were staring on the time countdown and its finished. Facebook usernames are now available worldwide and people can run and take their unique usernames before someone else with the same name takes it.
Many have already registered after they were just seeing the countdown coming to the end, and here is one of the captured screenshots at the ending time -

I would have gone for an underscore between my names but they are not allowed. That makes it different from twitter and many would have preferred to have an underscore just like what they have in twitter.
For the username, you can use A-Z, 0-9 and (.) but not underscores.
Facebook username feature was announced couple days back and its mainly useful for easy redirection of friends, and many can remember the username and just type it behind facebook.com to reach your profile.
It also helps in reducing confusion when there are many people with same name and you know someone with their username of other social networks, it becomes easier to search and add them as your friend on facebook.
