Part 6 - What’s your say on Bid directories?

I was actually amazed these days seeing people asking more about bid directories, their use and profit from them. I myself own a bid directory, and it is majorly to experiment things about it and really not just for making profit.
So here’s my take on a bid directory -

The present feeling about a normal webmaster towards a paid web directory has gone bad mostly due to a bid directory. Bid directory has become one of the easiest way for a webmaster to make money, as some small promotion and low bid fees would attract good number of link seekers to buy links in it.

I have not really seen any good bidding directory with quality content and good websites listed in it(in fact my own bid directory is one of the examples!). Bid directories are seriously good money makers in the start but later they fail big time. You are not bound to make long term income with a bid directory, as you would surely get penalized by Google for openly charging for link bidding, and thats the time where your directory period ends.

So my suggestion is that better go with a general paid or free directory, on which you can really work and make good value to it and make money, rather than going for the bid directories!

Part 4 - Should i go with free directories or paid directories for link building?

This post is for people who try to build links for their websites through web directories. They always fall in a big doubt whether it is good if you submit your websites to paid directories(due to google’s recent attach on paid links) or is it good if we submit our website to a free directory.

In my view, the time of free directories is gone, as they are all just turned to big spam boxes and link farms as its really hard for a single owner of a directory to spend hours to approve quality listings and delete others. And so, they just approve everything in bulk. This not only hurts the directory’s quality but also will affect the websites listed due to the bad quality of the directory. Having good PR in a free directory isn’t at all enough. Pure editorial dedication is needed from the owner or has to have editors who can work well to keep the directory clean and of good quality.

Now coming to a paid directory, Who said that Google hates a paid web directory? If that’s so, then why are many directories including Yahoo!, Business.com, and many other directories still working very well with great serps? Don’t yahoo and Business.com directory charge for listing your website in their index?

My only suggestion is that don’t fall into wrong words from a few directory haters that paid directories are waste of investment and money. You are paying mostly for a permanent business listing in it and this will get you a quality backlink(for SEO purpose) and some traffic(for promotion purpose).

So final conclusion remains, you have to pay sometimes to get better, rather than going free and downgrading your websites quality.

Part 4 - How to build a successful web directory?

Building a freaking directory is not a hard part, as you can just hire a good coder and designer who can setup everything very perfectly for you. But after everything’s set, you will be in a big doubt of how to promote your directory well and create a buzz of it, so that you can get other websites submitted in it for review.

Promoting a free web directory is not a hard part, as you get submissions easily, being free. But anyways this doesn’t say that you should not promote a free directory very much. Here are various ways of promoting a web directory(paid, free or bid for position) -

Although i don’t presently suggest to submit to a bulk of free directories(as most of them have become a big spam box and link farms.), you can just hire a submitter to submit to any big list of free directories, of which a few can get you good number of backlinks. Traffic from free directories is almost nothing.

Buying links - This was a great trend seen in the past, where people used to spend hundreds of dollars a month to build quality backlinks, but the big Google is always a step ahead of everyone, and has downgraded backlinks and pagerank of most of the big directories which were being promoted much through paid links. Anyways you can still build links but i suggest you to be slow and steady. My term Acute Linkplasia would explain more on this.

Through forums - There are many webmaster forums where a directory can be announced and promote for long-term through signature links in those forums. But as this is not a regular website, here is a list of directory related forums where you can be active and create enough buzz for your directory to be talked about.

Social Bookmarking - This is going to be a good way for you to get backlinks as well as some sort of traffic. Social bookmarking websites like Digg, Stumbleupon, Reddit, Del.icio.us etc. are the best one’s out there.

Article marketing - There are many good article directories where you can submit articles with your links in the resource box, and this can bring you some good backlinks.

Content, content and content - This is the best way to make your directory a quality resource. Directory always can’t be a big list of websites, but can become a good guide if loads of quality content is added in. There are still a very few quality established directories which have good unique content along with the listed websites, so directory world if improved with content, will be having a great future.

Be unique in design - Its better to invest some money in a unique template for your directory, which would be appreciated and liked, and also submitter’s trust builds if you are having something different from others.

These are the main steps that you have to follow when trying to build a good and successful directory. It doesn’t really matter if you are making a free or a paid directory, as anything worked well can make you good money.

Part 3 - How to earn from a web directory?

I would actually start by telling you all that making money from any kind of website, may that be a web directory, or a normal website, or a blog is not possible until you know the actual way of promoting it and letting the world know that you have a resource that is really helpful for them.

So, earning from a web directory is what you want to learn? There are several ways by which you can monetize your web directory and earn money from any type of directory.
I would like to divide this post into 2 parts - Making money from a free directory, and from a paid directory.

How to earn money from a free web directory
Although i won’t suggest you to open a free web directory if you don’t want to spend hours per day for reviewing websites, here are a few ways by which you can still make money from a free web directory -

Charge fee for Featured/Top of Category listing

Contextual ads like Google adsense, Adbrite etc.

Selling Private Ads

Earning through directory affiliate programs

Here are a few earning ways for paid directories -

Any listing can get you money - Regular or featured, as you are charging for every review.

Long term income with yearly subscription for links.

Contextual ads

Selling private Ads

Directory affiliate programs again!

There are few other ways to earn money apart from these, but i am still trying to figure out how those things get more money, will surely share them if i find them useful at all.

Part 2 - Best tools to build a good web directory

A web directory basically requires a perfect script, some good mods which can be integrated to make the directory function better, a good and unique directory design. These three things are the basic requirements to start off building a well established web directory.
I thought is might be good if i could share my favorite tools to use and make a good directory.
Note: This is my personal opinion post, so not listing all the scripts, templates etc. Just posting the one’s that i like.

The best script for a general web directory -
Phplinkdirectory is one of the best scripts for making a web directory, and is easy to setup. Has URL rewrite option, by which the URL’s of categories become SEO friendly, good admin panel and there are lots of templates available for free, and also unique template designers too.
It comes with 2 versions, and 3 payment options.
2x version and 3x version. 2x version is free to download and use. 3x version costs $25 for the script for a single directory including a linkback to the phpld site. There is a $75 version where you can remove the linkback and make the script completely premium and unique for you.

Other scripts which i tried but didn’t find upto expectations are -
Esyndicat, Phpmydirectory, Site-Sift Script, WSN Links, phpLynx, qlWeb script.

Now coming to the Mods, every script has many mods which makes the usability and user-friendliness of the directory better. Most popular are the deep links mod, news feed mod etc.

Designs for web directory - As i have suggested phplinkdirectory script here are a few good sites where you can get free phpld related themes for download, the free ones which have sponsored links in bottom, and you have to retain those links.
http://www.phpldthemes.com/
http://www.phpld-templates.com/
http://www.freephpldthemes.com/
http://www.directorymix.com/

If you are using any other script which i mentioned above, then you can check these -
Phplynx themes - http://www.mihocreations.com/phplynx.html
Site-sift templates - http://www.site-sift-templates.com/

If you need more information or suggestions about the web directory tools, just comment here and i would try to help you out.

Part 1 - What’s a web directory

So starting the web directory discussion series with the Introduction post. A general question stated by many newbies always is “What is a web directory?” and i am going to limit this post just to explain a web directory and not anything else.

Web directory is just similar to a telephone directory, which lists business websites in its index for people to search and find the business they are looking for.
A person might search for phone number of a specific person or company in a telephone directory, similarly an online worker or surfer will search for his website/business listing through a web directory.

People sometimes might get confused with the terms web directory and search engines, as both of them have the search option and list websites. But the main difference lies in 2 points -

Search engines do not have categories in them to index a website, but a web directory lists a website in a specific category to which it belongs.

Search engine use a different algorithm to list websites for a particular keyword, but in a web directory, websites are category wise and are in perfect lists to search around. There is commonly no special algorithm involved in listing websites in a web directory.

A specific business listing varies differently in various web directories, some having little info and some having complete information such as business information, contact information, location of the business etc.

Now coming to the types of web directories, there are a few different type of directories -
Depending on payment for inclusion -

Free directory - This type of directory does not charge to accept or review a website listing in its index.

Paid directory - This type of directory charges a submitter to review his website, and accept it into its index.

Bid for position Directory - A paid type of directory, in which websites have to bid higher to get to the top position and better exposure of their business.

Depending on the subject -

General web directory - Lists websites of all kinds in various categories.

Niche web directory - Directory built specifically to list websites of a specific category such as business, health etc.

Hope that makes you understand the basic point, what a web directory is and what are its types.

I finally thought to write up something like a tutorial explaining everything about a web directory. And am dividing this post into 6 essential parts -

Introduction To Web Directories

What are the best tools for a web directory?

How to make money from web directories?

How to launch a successful web directory?

Free or paid directories. Which is best for link building?

Talking about bid directories

Check all the above links and posts which i could write for people wanting to know more about web directories. Keep in mind that i am not a big web directory Mogul but am just trying to explain everything in my words, and feel it will be useful for people to understand the underneath of web directories.

Opera Mini, the beautiful web browser for mobile had been doing great with around 40 million people using it in their mobiles, and it was Opera mini 4 version which was in use till now. But Opera has now managed to release a new version of the browser with super new features helpful for bloggers especially. Opera Mini 4.1 is a faster mobile browser and helpful for many like me, who blog and browse the web mostly through the mobile devices.

The Opera developers have added features to make browsing easier and faster, also helpful for bloggers to upload images and make a photoblog.

This video will help you to get more info -

And here are the major improvements that can be seen in the new version of Opera Mini -

Faster than before - 50% faster than the previous version(no one was complaining that the older one was slow!), so now browse in the mobile at a speed in which you browse on your desktop.

Searching for URL is faster - As opera mini now will guess the URL when you are typing in the address bar, from your history and bookmarks.

Download and Upload Possible - This was the only drawback which was there in the previous versions and now its fixed. You can now upload or download compatible files from Opera Mini. You can add attachments to email too and upload pictures easily to flickr.

Save pages for offline browsing - A normal phone wap browser allowed people to save a page for any offline reference, but Opera Mini did not have that feature. With Opera Mini 4.1 it is possible to save web pages which can be viewed offline for any reference.

The browser has become smarter than before and developers are always working for its betterment

I got a couple emails from people asking me why they got banned from adsense. It was actually the barcamp post that led them mailing me thinking that am a google employee
Am not a google employee(would have been lucky if i was) but anyways i mostly know a few reasons why someone gets banned from Google adsense.

Here might be one or more reasons why your account was banned in Google adsense program.

You click on the ads - Your greed towards earnings when you are new to adsense, might have got your hands to click on the ads which you published in your website. This would be just foolishness if you click on your own ads, and its the very basic reason why most of the publishers get banned from Google adsense.

Encourage people to click - There are still many sites which still allow some sort of freebies to people who go through a procedure of adsense clicking. This is not allowed according to Google adsense policies. Asking for clikc by saying “Support us by clicking the ads” can easily get you banned.

All content is not allowed - Many a times, people don’t know which type of content is allowed to have google adsense and which is not. Here are some niches and types of content which can not be accompanied to be in a website with Google adsense -

Pornographic Content

Hacking/Cracking Content

Gambling or Casino related Content

Any other illegal download type Content

Google just don’t like it and don’t support placing ads in those type of sites. If you are placing in greed, your whole google adsense account is in danger.

No tricks to be played - Don’t place the ads in any tricky ways, by mixing up colors, or placing in such places which forces the visitors to forcibly click on the ads rather than navigating through your site.
Pop-up’s, pop-under and emails can not have google search boxes or ads in them. Any private pages also should not have Google ads in them.

Traffic/Click exchange programs - You think this would really generate some good revenue for you? Yes it does give you good money, but only until you get noticed by Google adsense team and you get banned. Traffic exchange programs on pages that have google ads, or exchanging adsense clicks with others through some programs or softwares will lead to a ban. So be careful and away from these things.

These are the reasons which i majorly see people getting banned in Google adsense for. If you know any other reasons, share them below.
