Google has gone through many changes this week and after its logo size changes in the search result pages, and the Google products like Talk, Mail going out of the beta stage, this is the big one – It launches Google Chrome Operating System. Check the blog post announcement here.
Google chrome OS would be a lite version operating system that is definitely going to challenge the Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems, and just like Google Chrome browser, it slowly would become one of the favorites in its field.
And the biggest decision made with this – It is going to be FREE and not going to cost anything, unlike Windows, Mac operating systems.
Its going to be officialy launched in the 2nd half of 2010, a lot of time to go still but expectations are already at the peek. It would be designed such as to run and make Chrome browser run in every netbook. As Google says, its an attempt to re-think what Operating systems should be. And as the current netbooks run XP, and Windows 7 is the next expected OS with 3 apps running at a time, Google Chrome OS would take it to the next level with the light web-based interface.
According to Google,
Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we’re already talking to partners about the project, and we’ll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.
Expected features and details about Google chrome operating system –
- Open source operating system
- Lightweight and faster than all other OS
- To be available 2nd half of 2010
- Targeting the netbooks due to lightness
- Key aspects – Speed, simplicity, security
- Redesigning the security architecture – Users don’t need to deal with viruses, malware and security updates
- Will run on x86 and ARM chips
- Web-based applications automatically work with the OS
- Developers can build apps with web as platform
- More inclined for netbooks used to browse the net more
With Google Chrome operating system, they are certainly trying to bring things faster to people. Everything like starting up of the computer, loading of browsers and the web everything to happen in fraction of time being taken in the present operating systems.
Apart from all this, syncing with the web, configuring any new software or hardware all would be made in the easiest and fastest way. And as the operating system is going to be open sourced, the availability of its code from the end of this year would already give the users a feel of what Google has in minds about it.
This war against Microsoft and Apple would be tough for Google, but from things like Free availability, open source etc. would crave in more users towards Google chrome OS than Windows and Mac OS X.
** Another excellent feature is that this OS being a web based, any application developed for Google Chrome OS would be compatible to use with web browsers in Windows, Mac and Linux too.
Although Google had lately come out with Android OS, this can not handle itself to run on x86 chips, and can not use the browser-based apps which is expected to run with the Chrome OS.
Google chrome browser is just around 9 months old, and already has gained a market share of 6% worldwide, so expectations for the OS are also good as the netbooks with this OS would come with the browser in it.
