Google Chrome web browser launch - Only for Windows as of now

Submitted by Chetan on Tuesday, 2 September 20087 Comments

Google chrome, the open source web browser from Google is being released today and am live watching the press conference, where everything about Chrome is being explained. Here is what they say -

Chrome is “fully open source, under a very permissive license.”
Borrowed the code from Mozilla to make all this.

Why we built chrome:
Web has evolved from static text to interactive pages (eg Google StreetView)
But “underlying browser architecuture is still very similar to original Netscape”
We believe browsers should evolve a lot more to keep pace with how the Web is evolving. What could you do if you built a browser from scratch? That was the genesis of Chrome

Each tab runs as own process.
* browser is more responsive
* crash-resistant (can close a tab indep)
* more secure - tabs are sandboxed

“The multiprocess architecture is funamental to chrome and we were able to do it since we rebuilt the browser from scratch”.

While this was on the process, I asked a question whether it is available for all the Operating systems or not, so got a reply -
Chrome will launch today for vista and XP
“We are working very hard on Mac and Linux versions”
Was designed for multi platform, but we decided to launch Win ver as soon as it was ready.
“A lot of use inside use Mac and Linux, there’s enough internal pressure” to get it out.

The live press conference is going on and am watching it. Will list out everything about the Chrome browser when its finished.

But as of what i see, the browser seems to be an awesome launch when seeing the features being mentioned and everything. Lets hope this to be a great release!

    should be interesting to see if Chrome works more efficiently than FireFox and IE… if it’s faster than Firefox, since isn’t IE, then i’ll use it

    I have yet to try this chromy stuff because I am still not very familiar with this. After all, I am satisfied with all the existing browsers I have… except that during blogging, I use firefox but I use safari and IE or opera depending on the activity i should do online.

    As I heard so much about this google chrome, i bet it would be best to try and see to have a feel of it myself. I think this weekend maybe. ^^
