Google Knol – Still a big expectation?
Many of you might be aware about the post from Udi Manber at the Official Google Blog, about the expected project from Google called as Knol(Meaning knowledge). For those who didn’t hear about this, it is going to be a wikipedia like website but not entirely similar to it. A single page will be under the control of a writer who has the rights to allow or not allow anyone to add more content etc. to the page.
And the concept was that the writer can earn by placing his own adsense code in the knol page which he creates.
This announcement was made on 13th. December 2007 and still there are no signs of its development or release from Google. They are constantly developing their network, one of their latest releases being Google sites. But Knol was just a single topic discussed by Manber and it vanished. No more news about it anywhere.
It was expected to be a big Wikipedia competitor, but would that be in the next era of the web? Wikipedia is already the world’s largest resource of content and open source and competing it would be a big task for Google, for which giving more time for its existence would have been good. But there are no Signs of launch of this tool.
Is it really going to be released atleast by the end of this year?
They say -
Google will provide easy-to-use tools for writing, editing, and so on, and it will provide free hosting of the content. Writers only need to write; we’ll do the rest.
But when would they provide and when would they do the rest? I still believe it will be one of the biggest challenge for Google to beat Wikipedia, until they use their tricks like dropping Wiki’s SERP rankings and bringing Knol pages to the top of Search results. What do you think?

Google loves copying other people’s sites/concepts.
DMOZ was numero uno when it came to directories. So google copied it. And now, no surprises that when you search for keyword “web directory”, then google directory comes at top.
So wikipedia right now ranks great for most of the generic keywords. So another copying attempt of the concept by Google. Whenever it is launched and if it is launched, then do not be surprised if Google knol ranks better than wikipedia.
Personally, i am not a big an of Google anymore.

There is no need for knol to show in google above wikipedia, the G team needs to just add a small code to show knol pages in #1 real results just below the adwords horizontal ads :p

Don’t you know Google has a motto called “Do no evil” and it also hates coped content
Would be a perfect example of Google using Adwords to advertise its own site
Apparently….
It hates copied content. Yeah Yeah Yeah. Google directory is a perfect example. PR8…Ha Ha….Sometimes G is so crap!

I have never heard of Knol, It would be nice to see it come out. Competition usually means better results for the end user.

The ‘free market’ has given us wikipedia and other pretenders. I would rather see Google apply it’s creativity and enormous programming resources to something innovative that will break new ground.

In today internet/web business, every type and kind of website will have challanges from competitor. Wiki is a well-known info provider type of engine while Google is a well-known for search of rich info on website via search. If knol come, not sure who will be the next info-monopo.

[...] Google knol which was being expected since a past few months, is finally opened and is still in the Beta stage, and works only for the people from US. So the good people who have knowledge and can write about something, are not eligible to write? Then what’s the use of it being open only for a particular place? [...]
