Guest blogging is a type of blog post writing by a blogger in a blog which he doesn’t own. This generally gets exposure for the guest blogger and his website. This art of guest blogging is running since a long time and many huge blogs like problogger, tyler cruz, john chow etc. allow guest blogging in their blogs. They give exposure to the guest blogger and free good quality content to the blog owner.
Here are a few advantages which a blog owner and guest blogger get by this.
- When talking about the blog owner, he gets some good networking and relationship with the fellow bloggers and writers.
- The similar way, writer gets good relationships with big bloggers only because of their writing skills.
- Traffic is one of the main factor which is for both the parties. Guest bloggers by placing their website links in the post would expect some traffic, which ultimately depends on the host blog where he is posting it.
And the blog where the guest post is being made will automatically get traffic through its own subscribers etc. for new post/content in the blog. - Free backlink, a good one for the writers. Generally people might be aware of contextual links, which cost them money for permanent links within the post. But if you have some really good writing experience, it can help your post to be approved as a guest post and in this way, some good quality backlinks can be achieved for free.
- New readers and branding - The writer can surely get some new traffic of their niche to their blog. And if the writer posts in some good blogs, he can be well known and it makes a good brand for him in his niche.
- And for the blog owner, he might get some easy way for updating his blog when he is very much busy to write a post or update it. This would keep his readers always busy and happy when they visit the blog.
There are not always advantages seen with guest blogging, there are some disadvantages too.
- Most of the subscribers not happy, for the blog owner who always posts normally and people love reading his write-ups and when they see someone else posting in the same blog, they wouldn’t see any value of subscription.
- Sometimes the writers think to make the quality of the post to such a level where it just shows only the writing skills of the guest writer. But the actual depth and meaning of the post is not reached.
- Most often, as seen in JohnChow.com, many anonymous comments are received in a guest post, which normally decreases the level of a post. And the post is considered to be not received well by the audience/subscribers of the blog.
Although i have mentioned a few disadvantages but for those who are trying to network with other bloggers, guest blogging is a great way to do so. What do you think about guest blogging?

For example, if 1 live in USA and 1 live in Asia, both owner of the bloger can actually share different kind of updates. Thats maybe 1 of the advantages.

Great post. I read mainly to see what you listed as the disadvantages. My main concern would be that my blog is “mine” and letting someone else post would, well…… I’ll stop being a blog hog now ;o)

Good points mentioned there. Do you allow guest posting in your blog?
It’s really up to the discretion of the blog owner, in regards to the quality of guest posts. John Chow’s guest bloggers aren’t THAT bad, but i’ve seen some really bad ones.

I have allowed 1 guest blogger on my site - I think it worked out well for both of us - I know I got a few new readers and I’m sure he will get a few more as well. Because of the nature of my site I think it is good for me to have guest bloggers so they can get a different perspective…My other site though I don’t think I would encourage it too much.

I think it can be great, but it needs to be done correctly. People need to consider who they let guest blog and not just grab anyone….and I don’t think it should be done so frequently that it becomes more about the guest bloggers than the original blogger (unless it’s more of a collaboration blog).
