Tech blog asked in my question/answer post -

How to do promotion for a blog ?

This is one of the most basic questions that every blogger asks when he does not see loads of traffic his way and he is unhappy of it. Every blogger tries to promote their blogs in such a way as to get the maximum exposure. I have already written a few posts which i will be linking below, on how to get your blog promoted well in the blogosphere.

First of all, when your blog is seemingly new, and you want a good blast and recognition, you should promote it well by contests, forum participation, commenting etc. Here are the 11 ways to get traffic to a new blog.

In that i have included some points such as social networking which include twitter, plurk, facebook and others also including the microblogging services which can help a lot.
Social bookmarking is one more good way of promoting a blog and getting good traffic :) One of the best of them is Digg(I don’t like stumbleupon traffic quality, particularly for my niche), and once you hit the front page of digg, you would know the difference of normal traffic and a promoted story traffic. Leading at social bookmarking sites needs networking, so networking is always a thing to be concerned of.

Other one goes about the blogging forums where your activeness can give you some good traffic, and also backlinks, if you are including your blog link in the signature under your posts. Here is a list of blogging forums where you can effectively promote your blog.

One more good way of promoting your blog is by helping other blogs, i.e. guest blogging. Guest blogging is a two way beneficial option for both the bloggers, one is the host blogger and one is the guest blogger. I had written the pros and cons of guest blogging earlier, and hope that helps you clear your doubt on guest blogging.

Blog contests, one more addition to full promotion and exposure of your blog. It is one of the best ways to gain subscribers and long term traffic your way, and also the contest don’t go well if you don’t promote the contest itself. Here are the ways to promote a blog contest.

Linking other blogs also help, but yet don’t make your blog a link farm by always keeping others linked in.. Here are some useful posts written by other good bloggers sharing tips on how to promote a blog -

Hope that helped in clearing your doubt ;)

Have to agree with you on StumbleUpon traffic…..it tends to send a huge traffic spike from the wrong side of the world, with an associated poor bounce rate. Commenting on associated blogs and forums definetely works best for me!

I agree with the comments relating to Stumble Upon traffic. It is easy to list on Stumble Upon however, Digg is a bit more challenging. An article on gaming Digg would really be appreciated.

I think what people tend to forget is the SEO part of it. Because getting thousands of traffic from SU, Digg, etc is nice but when it comes down to it, is it really going to help make you money? Increase your RSS Feed subscribers? Etc?

i think the best way to promote your blog or post is to leave genuine comments on other blogs of ur niche… that will help you to get back some genuine comments… other than that you should submit your post or blog to digg and stubleupon as these two are the best network for traffic…

I think your point of networking does make sense, and I think it is a long term investment and more than that it is something you really need to put yourself into.

I think the best promotion of your blog in the end is by word of mouth or I must say referrals.

Great tips there chetan. . .
Contests along with regular updates makes up a good recipie for a great start to a new blog.
i myself think that stumble upon traffic is just waste of bandwidth as the visitors just come and go, without actually reading the content.
