How to increase Nokia N-series mobile battery life

nokia bl 5c batteryIt was not only the iPhone whose battery had problems always(check tips to increase iPhone 3G battery life), but Nokia phone batteries also show battery drain and their problems as said by many normal users of Nokia N-series users.
And most of them tell about Nokia N70, Nokia N73 and Nokia N95 whose batteries end up faster than the other N-series mobiles. I too use a Nokia N70 but have never faced such problems, and i know why! That’s because i have used the very basic ideas to optimize and save its battery for longer time. (Check Nokia N97 mini battery life tips)

Some of the tips that i can share, to save the battery life of a BL-5C battery which is in most of the Nokia N-series mobiles are -

Reduce the number of open applications – Sometimes you open some applications like Music, Log, Contacts, Gallery and just hit the end button thinking that it’s closed already. But it isn’t. They run like a computer and indirectly you can say it as minimized. Hold the Menu button for more than a second and see what all applications are open. Try to have the minimum number of them open, as more apps opened just eat up your battery as more space is held by them at that particular time.

Use Nokia’s Power Saver option – Nokia gives you a default screensaver in your mobile phone which switches on your backlight to show its features etc. This is actually not needed to anyone, and it also eats up your battery without any benefit for you. Just turn this Off by activating Power Saver option On and set it with a minimum time so that the backlight turns off and your screen shows just the Date and Time.

Switch off bluetooth when not in use – Bluetooth in your mobile generally tries to automatically check for any devices, when it is on. If you are not using it then best is to switch it off so that that amount of battery is saved.

Use a single mode of network – There is an option of GSM, UTMS or Dual mode of networking when you go to Tools > Settings > Network settings. You should select any one network, not the dual mode of networking, as you are already using a GSM SIM and need just that network to connect. The other modes are battery eaters, as many suggest.

Turn Offline Mode On when not using the phone – When you are in a meeting or a movie where you would not wish to accept any calls, you would normally switch off the mobile phone. Better option is to activate the Offline Mode, which you can do by hitting the “Switch Off” button once, and then selecting the offline option. In this mode, the phone is not switched off, but there is no connection with the network and so battery is fully saved.
*** It is said that when the phone is switched off and on, then the boot system consumes more battery, so its better to use the offline mode than switching it off.***

Your favorite theme? Have it in your phone memory – Only if there is some space in it. This trick also works really well, and if people have brain, they would have done this already.
A small theme that you are using in your mobile, would be there On for all the time. And for this, the mobile system has to be connected to the memory card and receiving the info about it. Why not keep it in your phone memory and keep the 2 systems(Memory card and phone system) not connected? This would save some battery for sure.

Packet Data only when needed – The packet data connection would automatically try to connect to the network and receive the packet data also when you don’t need it, if you are still running with the default phone settings. Go to Settings > Connection > Packet Data connection and then select “Packet data connection when needed”, and this will make the phone connect for packet data when you are browsing the web, and not always.

Decrease display backlight – Reduce the brightness of the backlight whenever you are not using it for some web type work. Don’t be doing that until the low light hurts your eyes. This is not a trick, but a common tip for any mobile user, who wants to conserve some battery.

Avoid calls in low signals – When you see that the signals are too low and you still are making some calls, that would be a mistake until the call is too necessary. As a big percentage of battery is used to pull the network to a maximum to make the call better, and the battery drains faster.

If the above tips and tricks do not work well still after few days of trying them out, my suggestion would be to check whether the battery you have got is the Original battery from Nokia or not. Go to battery replacement program by Nokia and check it with your battery number. If they say it’s not, just replace it as the duplicate batteries can explode at any time.

    Varun,

Soon i would be posting about the Sony Ericsson battery saving tips.

    Amit,

That’s why i warned everyone not to do it until it hurts your eyes. Checking contacts don’t take long time, so no problem. But things like chatting through SMS, playing games can strain your eyes in dim light.

great tip I love to know about Sony Ericsson :)

    A bit from my side.
Never charge your battery when it is half drain. Let it drain to the last bar. If battery is charged half drained then it reduces battery life and causes it to drain faster.
Disable keypad tones. you use keypad the most. And this little sound can eat battery.
Disable vibrator. That too uses more battery..

I use N72 for last 18 months and still no problems. I charge my battery once in two days.

  7. Sherry says:

thanks Guttu, i didn’t realise that at all I always charge when half drain.

A typical Nokia battery life is about 400 charges. After that it’s good to replace it. Most of us charge daily. So it’s life is over after 13-14 months. And charging alternate days doubles the life.

  13. Chetan says:

@Guttu: Still it depends on the usage. So if you are using the mobile more, you need frequent charging. And that’s why these optimization tips.

I have been reading up on this subject for a while & always get obvious answers like the above.
    I’m sick of seeing them.
this is how it works for me, I own 2 Nokia 6120c’s, for coming up to 2 1/2 years now.
One acts as the phone the other a charging station. so thats 2 batterys i use.
we all know that with these advanced smart phones with proper constant use i.e gaming, emulators, word task, internet, bluetooth(heavy use) & multitasking there is a stanard amongst these types of phone to be dead around the 2 hours mark.
that wont change unless you only use the phone as a phone for short calls & texts only but that defeats the point of it being a smart phone dont it.
there is somthing called a ZERO point in all rechrage batterys, when your phone gets there it dies & its time to recharge.
if you wait for this & then charge. You will like me have had a great 2 1/2 years and still going strong battery’s that still deliver roughly the same amount of power as the day i first used them.
on the other hand it you charge the phone at any given point thinking ahh i give it a little more juice for later. or get into the routine of charging when you go to bed with a quater or more of battery left, Then as stated above you will see a battery life of 400 charges, but thats not battery life thats charge life.
Any charge that is done when the battery is not dead resets the Zero point which sortends the amount of charge the batt holds.
which is why you get the sittuations where you end up charging your phones all day & night only to get a fraction of its original batt life.
2 1/2 years of charging my batterys 2 to 3 times in a night each(at work that is. I do 12 hour shifts by myself) with 2 hours of use each. is a living testament to what i have said.
A quick brief estimate is that i have got 1000+ charges for each battery so far.
A batterys life is in your control.

  25. AJ says:

That are all true, except for one.
It’s not good to switch in offline mode! What if someone’s calling you, he/she will not reach you.

Anyway, that tip will be a big help to save battery life(not increase battery life!)

  26. fur says:

AJ, you didn’t get it..he just said that SWITCHING OFF and ON THE PHONE will consume the battery more than if you would use OFFLINE mode, this is just in case you really need to shut it down somehow. so this is a very smart trick, thank you..think about an engine that absorbes 8x times the energy when is powered on than when it normally functioning. hope you get me. thanks again for this tips, i have N73 for 3 years, and half of them are new to me.
