How do you judge the popularity of a post in your blog?
Is it by the number of views or the number of comments?
I generally see four types of blogs when i read them, i observe things that they do with their sidebar and top bar. The types i see are -
1. Blogs that have top posts arranged in the top bar or sidebar and posts are arranged in an order of posts having highest views.
2. Blogs that have top posts arranged in the top bar or sidebar and posts are arranged in an order of posts having highest comments.
3. Some blogs have top posts, arranged both in an order with highest views and comments, displayed in the sidebar or top bar.
4. Some blogs have no top posts section and they just try to make their blog a standard one giving equal importance to each post of the blog.

I use comments to decide how popular a blog is. Anyone can generate views - game Digg or Stumble Upon, and you can get a couple thousand. It’s the quality of your promotion (and thus the comments you get) that shows how good a blog is.

Yep its true that views can be generated by digg etc. but not comments
Popularity has to be decided by the controversy in it.
I agree with Jason here. And not just comments, they have to be spread, if one post have 200 comments and the others just have 2 each, that will have to be the digg effect:p

Just because someone is viewing your article it doesn’t mean he’s actually going to reading it. If members are commenting then not only do you know they are in fact reading your material but are interested by it.
there is many reasons to judge the popularity of blog
not just comments, the blog is must have some nice UV, PR, SERP

I think it’s number of views that matter. A particlular post may give arise to a number of comments but that doesn’t mean that users like it.. While, people view a post only if they find attractive..
thats right guys
Well I give importance to both factor but I would prefer for comments because you can generate many views without any problems. You may use Traffic generator or Aurosurf to get 1000+ views in 24 hours but comments is comming from reading of blog post.

Both the factors r certainly important, but the comments maybe little bit more
Like everyone says both factor are important but I would prefer for comments. People many view the topic but theyu only respond to it if they find it important.
well acc to me both factors are important
but it would be good if my visitors are more like my post got 20k visitors and then 15-20 comments ar eok
I think the views give a more clear idea about which one is more popular..most of the visitors don’t even bother to write comments even though if they liked the post so this does not means that the post is not popular…
Both are needed for a blog to be famous… Also you need to offer goodies to the readers..

I think that the comments is more important for judging popularity of any blog. It is not necessary that the viewer has read the content, it may be that he has simply clicked the blog and left without reading. But to make a comment it is necessary to read the blog.
Wow so more comment lovers here

I too always had some sort of feeling that views can be easily generated, but not the comments
It all depends on pageviews and not comments.
Comments can be bought.

i think views is more important . . . . .
some sites offer exiting prizes(no offence ment chetan) for the posts/comments so people go on a spree . . .so it is better to see the number of posts and the time spent in the site
