Ok this might/might not be an inspiring or interesting story for everyone reading it but i thought its worth doing so for the “Social Media for Social Good“ contest by Mashable, which is 100% for charity and nothing else.
In this contest, you just need to post a true story of anytime you helped, or got any help through social media like Twitter, Facebook etc. and share it with people.
Have you raised money through a blog, Twitter, or Facebook? Have you received help coping with illness or loss thanks to a social media community? Do you have colleagues or relatives who turned a crisis into an opportunity thanks to social media tools? We want to hear these stories, and the publishing company Wiley has offered free social media books for the best submissions.
You have to write a blog post, embed the donation widget into the blog post, and leave a link to the post in the comments section.
Here is a widget where you can donate money for good cause -
And here goes my short, true story -
Twestival, a fund raising program initiated through Twitter was a very great movement all around the world where people conducted meetings to create awareness about Twestival and Charity:Water through which the money collected would be used to dig wells for places where there is scarcity of water.I was excited with this when i first heard about it, and one could take control and claim leadership for particular city. I did the same for Nizamabad city and that being a place where there is no much room for the rise of the Internet, i kept silent there and did the same in Hyderabad with my friends. We conducted a small meet in our area and quite few people gathered in the beginning.
They understood everything pretty well and were happy to donate. This all was for the first day and what we collected as funds was not much, still good enough to say that we too were part of the great Twestival cause.
But after the twestival day finished too, we got some good response and those people who donated and were there during the Twestival meet promoted it in some other ways in their offices etc. and i was given an unexpected amount of funds after a couple of weeks. I just decided to go some other way, and donated the amount to “Intellectualy disabled children” based society and i was seeing myself with tears when i was talking to a couple children who were not understanding most of what i was talking/asking to them. But then, i was very happy that these children would be given some goodies with the donation that i gave. You don’t know how it feels when someone is struggling to live and you raise your hands to reach them and help them out. The same society was then asked to bring all those children to our Dental college for a free dental camp (College too inspired by what we did!)
Not caring of whether it was an inspiring story or not, this was the only thing of Good cause in social media that happened with me and that was through Twitter.
You too can share your story and check out the contest at Stories for Good Contest!
