Nagesh Kukunoor on the stage! Talking about Unexplored Zone

11:17: Films primarily needs to entertain people. Taking people into dark spaces, and into journey of a story made. After Hyderabad Blues movie that I made, the first interview..
11:19: I had $40,000 in hands, and wanted to make a movie. It was just the madness to make one. Back in ’97 I said the movie is at an unexplored zone of Art and advertisement.
11:22: Nagesh explains about the unexplored zone! how he planned to make a second movie, but not with his own money this time.
11:23: Nagesh: Chose to make a film about a boy in a boarding school.. and in Hyderabad Blues, the language was taken as a good factor – English, hindi and telugu all the 3..
11:26: Nagesh: I try to work on justifying the character of the person in the film.
11:28: Dor had a similar case with a Rajasthani girl in it, and after HB2 which didn’t work well, I went for the first Hindi film i.e. Iqbal where actual hindi speaking people were to act in.
11:31: Nagesh: Iqbal worked well, and if that film didn’t work, I would have never found what would have worked.. There is still no guarantee that focusing on just a few things would bring a success always.
11:34: Nagesh: Women don’t find it good to watch films about women. As Dor was about 2 women, it was a big talk and controversy around.
11:36: Nagesh shares about the post-release talks of Dor, and how people were touched and came to appreciate him..
11:38: Nagesh: We filmmakers have little ideas of film making. And it was Bombay to Bangkok which took more effort than Iqbal, to make the film and handle things around.
11:40: Nagesh is happy to end it soon, as the anchor says it’s time up!
11:41: Ye Hausla is the upcoming movie by Nagesh Kukunoor, and he shares a beautiful quote in Hindi.. to end the session.

Karuna Gopal – The truth about Indian Cities

Karuna starts with a story about a woman with all abnormalities, and talking about the curious cases of Indian cities.
11:45: Hyderabad is 725 sq. km. now.
11:46: Karuna explains about the cities comparing it with obese bodies. The control units in cities are the same but the population and need is increasing.
11:47: Karuna: Slumdog millionaire explains a lot already about the slum in India. Delhi Metro, Bandra Worli Sea Link are an example of infrastructures that have laid something good in India.
11:49: Karuna: If thats the case in better areas, people in the same city die for water, die for better living. We all know, 2500 people died in 9/11 attacks but no one cares how many die everyday due to the improper management in the city, and water scarcity. 60% areas don’t get water properly in Delhi.
11:51: Karuna: People getting into the manholes for water, die and story ends there. Management doesn’t look into all this.
11:52: Open defecation, traffic jams etc. are still a problem.
11:53: Karuna: Vision for the city of Hyderabad: Decongest the core area to enhance the quality of life and economically attractive without disturbing the character.
11:54: We don’t know there is a law for involvement of people for community projects, and so government doesn’t tell people about all this, and people don’t help.
(Shows pictures of bridge falling down in Delhi, and a flyover fell down in Hyderabad.. as the concerned agencies didn’t care much)
11:56: Karuna: We are not in a position to help the government, as they don’t share what the facts are. If they did, they would be happy to find the help in return.
11:57: “The only cure for litter is you!”
11:58: Karuna: There are many fearful ads and posters in other parts of the world to make people wonder and change themselves, but that’s not the same in India.
11:59: Karuna: We don’t have a city merchandise. Business can not succeed in cities that fail.
12:00: Karuna: Partner, Reformer, Activists – 3 parts!
12:00: Karuna ends it with a good note that she has gone through many things, and could go make it better, but wants to have a well governed city that can make everything better, in her and in the city.
