Session 3 of TEDxHitechcity: Fire – 1:45 – 3:15 – Neeraj Raj, Sharat Chandra, Sachin Ralhan, Kanthi Kannan, Jyotirmaya Sharma!

Session 1 and Session 2 of the event have been good, and the best of them were by Nagesh Kukunoor, Karuna Gopal and Deepak Menon, all from Session 2. Hopefully I don’t fall asleep while blogging the event live now, after a good lunch.
Lunch session started at around 12:40, so 10 minutes more and we start off with Session 3.

13:47:
Dr Neeraj Raj on Heads Malaria, Tails Jaundice

13:47: A large number of people are treated by those who have never got any medical or health care education. NHRC calls for meeting on illegal medical practice.
13:49: Neeraj: After spending 10 years and 5-8 million rupees, people do not take non-clinical specialities but are just being edged to clinical side to make money.
13:50: Neeraj: This all leads to rural divide, where population from rural areas goes to take treatment from Quacks.
13:50: Neeraj: 70% teacher time goes in teaching repetitive facts, at costs of teaching skills.
Why not digitize the medical education?
13:51: Neeraj: A software where everything can be done. Notes, lectures, MCQs, feedback sending, share articles etc.
13:54: Neeraj: The method should be digitized in such a way that you can do anything, like go to seminars, approach any cases, and study cases in any subject, get into film interpretation sessions and learn more about those particular cases.
13:56: Neeraj: The software has things and lessons in various languages, and go watch the interactive tutorials.
Digital Approach to Medical Education
13:58: Neeraj: It covers the entire curriculum end-to-end. And standardizes what everyone learns and practices. This is a methodology approved by Medical council and dental council of India. Provides means to deliver distance education of healthcare education.
14:03: Neeraj: Role of Community Healthcare Practitioners – Practice preventive & promotive health in community, recognize danger signs, provide immediate first aid, manage 50% common problems where doctors are not needed, and consult urban doctor through telemedicine and manage another 25% problems. Refer 25% cases to a specialist.
14:04: This is not to promote Dr. P.K. Golmarkar. Its a different method and the same concepts can be learned through different methods. These people can understand the problems.
14:06: End of the session

Expectations by Sharat: There would be no Schools by 2025!! Traditional Exams – Pen & Paper Tests will be replaced.
14:11: Sharat: Children are going to DEMAND fun and joy while learning. A cards game on vegetables.
14:13: Give challenges to children to see things done.
14:14: Call conferencing in a classroom, similar to the concept used by Graham Bell, by children holding threads and paper cups near their ears.
14:16 An excellent video on how thinking and ideas can get things done in a better way.
14:17 End of session

14:18:
Prosenjit Ganguly – Flowers do fly

We do things that we have to do.
14:18: Prosenjit: Things changing, within the class. We were let to think, but we always tried to learn from others. 14:20: Prosenjit shows an animated video – The best of the day!!
14:26: Technique is also a tool. The hidden treasures come out in the open.
14:28: Prosenjit: We collected expressions from experiences and kids sent their views about their school life. For 5 days, we became storyteller, painter, actor, performers etc. and 6 weeks as film director. All minute details that bring out the story just as desired by it’s creator.
14:30: Prosenjit: We go to school for experience.
14:31: Green Man : The film.. being shown!

14:40:
Kanthi Kannan – Walking a fundamental right?

We never walk, never send our children to walk and get something from outside.
Footpaths are used for dustbins, urinals, or use it for extension of homes or offices!
14:42: Everyone in drivers, Children, Aged, Physically challenged are affected.
14:43: Do we need “The Right to Walk”? Education, Livelihood, Public transport, Health.
14:44: Single biggest difference between the infrastructure of an advanced country and a developing one is the footpaths and not a highway.
14:46: Solutions can be given by the government. Acknowledge the critical nature of the issue, enforce the law, have pedestrian policy and policing, public private partnerships, encourage out of the box thinking, market walking and make it a cool thing to do.
14:48: You too can be a pedestrian. Those who walk can not decide and those who decide do not walk.
