Why wordpress is better than blogger

I had thought to post about this since a long time, but now finally got to write this. I am a fan of wordpress since when i shifted to it from blogger long time ago when i was still new to blogging and to the blogosphere. Both blogger and wordpress are free softwares to use, but the actual fun and reality of blogging is seen only with wordpress.
You can learn more about blogging with wordpress and then decide yourself which you should go with. :)

Here are the 5 basic reasons why i feel that wordpress is better than blogger -
Wordpress Blog Software
1. Ownership and branding - I could install the software to the server under my owned domain name with no sub-domain name structures. Like am on thewwwblog.com which looks lot better than thewwwblog.blogspot.com, and having something behind your desired name doesn’t look brandable. Wordpress proudly hands over the “Ownership” rights to us, making us the sole owner of the blog. With blogger, you are under their ownership and are just a blogger with no much branding to your blog.

2. Blogs never go dead - This statement is right until you yourself kill the blog. If in any case, your blog is hacked or the database is lost, then you can have a backup from your server, or directly through your host. :) But in blogger seen most of the times, blogs are just gone, and a line “Blog not found” is seen there when we try to access the blog. There are very little chances of recovering a deleted blog in blogger.

3. Categorized blogging - This is one of the main advantages with wordpress, we can have any number of categories and can post in these categories, rather than having no categories and posting random stuff as in blogger.
A normal visitor searches for articles/posts in his desired category if he is browsing a blog powered by wordpress, but in a blogger blog there is absence of categories leading to visitor being in a confused land.

Blogger Blog Software4. Plugins for customization - There are thousands of plugins that help a wordpress blog to look more smarter always, easy to use and makes it more search engine friendly. A wordpress blog can be customized into any type and can be made look like a normal website/forum etc. Blogger gives just a blog, nothing more like plugins are included with it.

5. Reaching the world through pings - Hundreds of pinging services and blog directories with RSS accept all wordpress feeds and are pinged once and always when a post is published in the wordpress blog, and the pinging in their sites can be automated.
The same isn’t there with blogger and very few blog directories accept feeds from blogger powered sites.

This is enough from my side to explain why wordpress rocks :) Hope most of the perfect bloggers now are using Wordpress ;)

Well wordpress is always rocking because you have control over everything, i mean that. in case of blogger your enemies or competitors can flag up your blog and get it blocked/closed but in this case all of the content is hosted by you on your own web host, this makes a hell lot of different and this is just the beginning.

Yeah flagging problem was one of those which i forgot to mention.. Self hosting therefore rocks again!

  5. Mayank Rocks says:

Self hosting is always the best :)

Because you can do anything with it and it is more powerful. Blogger doesn’t give all features to you and plus I dont like the URL – .blogspot.com Looks crap to me. Own domain is something I’ve always prefer :)

Great reasons, Chetan. I prefer WP, of course, because of its powerful and flexible features. I believe that serious bloggers who use blogger.com will switch to WP sooner or later. :)

P.S. I’m running a contest on my blog, hope you (and your readers) can participate. ;)

i can upload filesize whatever i want on my own domain using wordpress, uploading any file that i want, but for blooger… there is always a limitation, thats why it is free, while having your own domain, you need to pay for it. Plugin, loads of them can be installed on my domain wordpress, blogger, not much to have at this moment.

On Entrecard, if i see a blog hosted on blogger, i usually don’t bother advertising on it. Plus, the themes are blogger are just generally a lot worse than WP, what a pain!

I know it’s daunting for people to switch (it took me ages before finally moving to WP from cutenews, oh those were the days), but at lest give it a try and check out the cool features.

I recently switched from Blogger to WordPress at the advice of a friend. I absolutely agree that WP is better. I just need to learn how to get better at blogging. I am always scrutinizing what I write instead of relaxing and communicating. Any tips out there?

  25. I really liked your article. My compliments!! Thank you!

  26. melissa says:

I am still new to blogging and I was looking for a comparison with Wordpress and Blogger, and this really helped. I think the main reason that I would stick with Wordpress though, is that I have it installed on my own server. Definately a must! I do like the thing with blogger where people can Follow the blog and it shows who is following your blog. Is there any way to do that on Wordpress?

  27. Jan the fish says:

Well… I’m not fan of blogs. Even though I installed blogs (WP MU) on my site (should be linked from my name), it drives me crazy (WordPress). For example, when I moved my site from shared hosting to the dedicated one, I had to transfer the WP MU too. Files have been copied, so was the database. After uploading onto the new server everything worked except for WP MU. It actually worked, but registration of new users didn’t! Also the user interface (after logging in) became very slow. In addition, when I tried to migrate from older WP MU to the newer one, the database was screwed…

So… everything works fine until you’re upgrading. In addition, when I was upgrading WP (single user installation) I lost customisations each time I did so.

For me, WP is just another application which I don’t use.

Nothing personal, of course… just my opinion.

  28. ck says:

Actually, regarding reason 1 about subdopmains: you can buy your own domain for blogger for 10 bucks/year.
As to reason 4 about customisation: you can edit the css of blogger anyway you want it.
The reason why i prefer blogger over wp is becaise my email, and adsense account is with google, so I dont need to create opne more acount and thus have to remember only one username, password.
