WordPress 2.7 release date – November 10th 2008 – Some features

wordpress logoWordPress development team is always working on the betterment of the platform and user-interface. And this time, on November 10th 2008, the release of WordPress 2.7 Version would show how much the wordpress platform has been worked on.

There are a lot of improvements being made, and the wordpress 2.7 release after the 2.5 version release is going to show a new admin interface to everyone, not very confusing though. This version can be called a Plugin Reducer Version as it has some features which used to come only with a few plugins installed.

Here is what all are suggested features for the new version of wordpress, although its not sure if they would be all available or a few of them -

  • Keyboard shortcuts for comment moderation.
  • Sticky posts, means an option to have a post featured till you want it to be. There was a plugin for this earlier.
  • Changes in the structure of dashboard.
  • Write box in the trunk, with sidebars on both the sides.
  • oEmbed support, tied in with shortcodes.
  • Reply comments through admin section, this was also a plugin called Ozh absolute comments.
  • Frame-like method for moderating ping/trackbacks.
  • Codepress code highlighting for template editing.
  • Separate Large and Full image sizes, related improvements.
  • Sitemaps by default.

There is a new plugin uninstall in WordPress 2.7 that allows a plugin to uninstall itself, when the user deletes the plugin. There are two uninstall methods that the plugin can implement. One is by creating a file in the base plugin directory named uninstall.php and storing the uninstall code there. The second method is by creating a hook that will execute the uninstall routines and using register_uninstall_hook() function to register the hook with WordPress.

WordPress 2.7 is going to have an API for adding additional sections to the manage or settings administration panels. This means directly in those pages and not as a new page. The functions add_settings_section(), add_settings_field(), register_setting(), unregister_setting() implement this feature.

And many more changes to come. What do you have to say about this?

There is a plugin for automatic upgrade of wordpress through admin panel. You can check for that, for some ease during upgradation.
