WordPress SEO tweaks for blogging newbies

March 10th, 2008 | View Comments

WordpressWordPress has been one of the best blogging platforms, a few reasons why i liked it over blogger and the main reason being search engine friendliness. It is not readily present as a search engine friendly blog, but we have to follow few steps to make it look better and more liked by the Search engines, mainly Google.

Here are the most basic ones that you should follow when you start a wordpress blog, mainly trying to depend on organic traffic(traffic from search engines, through search results!) -

  • Changing Permalinks - This is the first and foremost thing to be done when you start a new wordpress blog, about which i already had described in my basic steps post for a new wordpress blog. You can change the permalinks structure by going to your admin through > your-blog.com/wp-admin/options-permalink.php
  • All in One SEO Pack - One of the best wordpress plugins, using which you can have and make changes to your Home Title, Home Description, Home Keywords, Post title, description, keywords, format of URL’s etc. It is rated as one of the best plugins around for better SEO of your blogs. I am using it and you can see the changes in title of the post present in the page, and that appears on the top of the browser.
  • Don’t link post title in single post - This is a thing discovered by many bloggers, that their blog rankings were badly hurt in google as they were linking to the same post by hyperlinking the title of the single post in the post page. So just removed the option in my blog too.
  • Try for lesser outbounds - If your blog is new, linking to many sites from your posts would be a big factor that hurts your rankings. So don’t try to credit as many sites if you are still new to blogging. Limit the number of outbounds always, over linkings is really bad.
  • Let Search Engines know about you - Submitting to search engines is not a way to directly get indexed in them. You better can submit to social bookmarking sites from where Search engines can reach your blog and index you. Anyways if you have something unique and new in your blog, you can submit to the blog search engine of blogs. But don’t do it very frequently.

There are many other tips for bloggers for optimizing their blog when you have a new wordpress blog into the blogosphere. Will share about each, and especially about the “All in One SEO Pack” plugin later.

  11. Chetan Says:

    Good question asked :)

If you check this blog, it will have most of the link nofollowed in the post.
This will save the value for your new blog, but when your blog gets well established i always saw that linking to other good websites doesn’t effect your rankings.

  12. Hussein Says:

    Thanks for that info.

The post starts with this title – “WordPress SEO tweaks for blogging newbies”
You will see that it is not linked to the post URL.. The reason for that is not known specifically but i read in many blogs that it hurts rankings if you link to the same URL in the post.

  15. Meethere Says:

    OK I got that now.
I must change the default settings now. I hope that requires editing single.php :)

If I am allowed to add would be to show full post content on a single post only and just an excerpt on front page and archive page to avoid duplicate content.

This blog is a testimony of what should be done as it only shows title instead.

Great blog you have it here with lots of information. Will drop by again surely.
